Next time you go to do a simple job in the work place remember that the most common workplace related injuries are hand injuries. Cut resistant gloves have the ability to reduce or even eliminate many of these injuries that take pale in an industrial environment or the kitchen. There are a couple of different kinds of cut resistant gloves and some are better than others so here I will discuss the basics.
First off, not all cuts are equal. Some are punctures, some are crushes, there are scrapes, slashes and scratches. The injuries are caused by a wide array of different tools scissor, scalpels, kitchen knives, or broken glass. The injury may be due to complacency , improper handling or just bad luck. But one thing is for sure, and that is that cut resistant gloves have the capacity to greatly reduce the occurrence of work or home related hand injuries when used properly.
The most common type of cut resistant gloves are simple leather gloves that can withstand basic scratches and other abrasion. These are great because they are comfortable, versatile, and can be had for a relatively good price. There are also cotton, or other fiber type gloves that work in the same way. Simply covering the hands with a protective sheath can eliminate many of the hazards.
The next step up the ladder of of resistance would be kevlar gloves. Kevlar is a super strong fiber, it is used in bullet proof vest as well as other applications that require high durability. The kevlar fibers are actually worked into any other type of fiber like cotton to wool to strengthen the glove. These may be cut resistant but they are still susceptible to puncture and other trauma. The user should not gain a false sense of confidence from kevlar gloves. Bleach has the ability to degrade the kevlar to a point that it is no longer effective. Proper care of kevlar gloves is important.
Next you would have metal mesh gloves. These resemble chain mail and are often employed in situation where cuts are highly likely, like cooking or dealing with sharp toothed animals. These work better than kevlar gloves to protect from cuts but are also much less flexible and functional.
What ever the case you need to look closely at the situation that you are using the gloves for and decide upon what will be the proper glove for the job. You must keep in mind that for chemical or toxic substance handling cut resistance glove offer no protection for the most part. If you need specialized gloves for this application you should be able to find something that works.
I want to focus on cut resistance so I will look at the main types of cut resistant gloves a little more closely starting with the Kevlar gloves. Kevlar is a man made fiber with a specialized combination of characteristics, one is its ability to protect against punctures and cuts. Ounce for ounce kevlar is extraordinarily strong and light. This allows integration into work gloves which allows them to be strong, light, flexible, and highly protective. It also allows for a better fit than many other gloves made of different material offering similar levels of protection. In addition Kevlar gloves are resistant to thermal burn and do not melt or liquify in the presence of high heat.
These functions make Kevlar work gloves a great choice for dangerous applications that use sharp objects of high heat. Kevlar gloves are used extensively in industrial applications and are recognized as a benchmark for safety. They have saved numerous hands from painful injury. There are other additions to kevlar gloves, like sleeves or shirt covers for additional protection in high risk situation.
Metal mesh gloves
Metal mesh gloves are made of stainless steel mesh or another similar metal. These offer the utmost in protection and have a very long life expectancy. They basically do not degrade unless subjected to very harsh conditions. They must be cleaned on a regular basis especially when used in conjunction with food preparation. The main complaint of workers using metal gloves is that they are uncomfortable and limit dexterity. That said, many manufactures have used new methods to improve the comfort and fit of these gloves while providing ample protection.
Cut resistant gloves are a great way save your fingers and give you the confidence that you can get the job done safely. There are varieties of cut restraint waterproof gloves and heat proof gloves. Whatever the application there is a glove for you. If it be simple kevlar gloves or plain leather gloves, pick the work glove that is suitable for your job.
