Ever need more space

The average family starts out with 2 cars and adds more as their kids get older. Most homes having a 2 car garage this becomes a problem. A steel carport one of the easiest ways to protect your investment without making a huge investment in a home addition. Steel carports are multi versatile, easy to put up and take down, and inexpensive when compared with the alternatives.

Choosing a steel carport can make your head spin. You can literally stop on the side of the road at some busy intersections and steel carports sellers touting their wares. Ease of entry into this market makes it certain that there will be heated competition and makes it necessary for you to eliminate the shiesters.

Buying a steel building to protect your vehicle should not come down to the lowest bidder. When you consider that adding a steel carport to your home has the potential to significantly increase the value of your home as well as last for many years to come and preserve the quality of your new vehicle.

Arming yourself with knowledge is the first step in making a wise buying decision. I will look at a few aspects of steel carports and what you should look for when making the investment.

FIrst I will discuss galvanized steel. Many people are familiar with galvanized nails but really don’t have much of an idea about what galvanization really is. Now you don’t have to be embarrassed to ask, you can nod with approval when a sales man makes his pitch.

Steel is a very sturdy material, but it is susceptible to rust, and a rusty carport will not do you much good. So galvanizing steel simply means applying a zinc coating. This is usually sprayed or the steel is dipped into the zinc. The zinc creates a barrier for the corrosive elements, so you get many more years out of your steel carport if it is galvanized.

Next along the information highway is the gauge of metal. This is another simple bit of terminology that you make not have ever learned. This is related to the thickness of the steel. As I am sure you can guess, heavier is better, and the confusing part is that a lower numerical gauge means a heavier thicker cut of steel. Heavier steel will protect your vehicle better and last longer. It will be less susceptible to wind, falling trees, acts of god, and will provide more overall structural support.

The framing of a steel carport is also something to consider. You should stay away from wood framing, this kind of defeats the purpose of a metal covering. Most carports will be constructed out of tubing or a square tubing. This will often be telescopic or will fit together like tent poles. Aluminum or galvanized steel are common and both are excellent methods of construction.

Using other materials besides steel is not suggested for carports. Wood, plastic, and other synthetics simply do not have the same life expectancy as metal. If you want a carport that will last for many years to come a metal carport is the way to go. If you want to be able to take it with you when you move, metal is the way to go, if you want to be able to recycle it when you are finished with it and recoup some of your initial investment metal is the way to go. If you want to save some money in initial set up and construction, metal is the way to go.

There are all shapes and sizes of steel carport and they should not be limited to cars by any means. If you have an RV, boat, or any other recreational vehicle steel carports are a great alternative. For many recreation vehicles carports have the added advantage of allowing you to wash your vehicle while it is in storage.

There are many different types of construction. Some of which will allow for more customization or making it easier to match your existing home or allow for refinishing, such as painting. Getting models that can house multiple vehicles is also a very good option for the forward thinking family.

Aside from adding life to your vehicles inside and out and saving you money on initial investments a steel carport could lower your insurance premiums. Talk to your insurance agent about possible savings on your monthly premiums. Any savings is good savings.

Spend your money wisely and protect your valuable assets. Steel carports are a simple cost effective way to quickly add value to your home while protecting your valuables and keeping the bird poop away.
