A Touch of Class

For a better future

The world is going green weather you like it or not so if it is just starting to recycle or adding some DIY solar panels to your roof get ready for some big changes in the years to come. Solar power quiet possibly has the most potential out of all of the different forms of alternative energy. I say this not because of the ease of use but because of how well solar panels can be integrated into buildings and other structures.

The most simple application is to cover a roof with solar panels but there are many other ways to utilize solar power. Panels can be worked into different structures artistically, they can be applied to windows, they can be applied to the roofs of cars, or you can utilize portable solar panels. Once you start to look around and recognize how many different places solar panels can be used it is amazing.

The main problem with solar panels in the past has been that they are cost prohibitive, this may still be the case for many but fortunately the price has come down substantially and it is now possible to get your hands on a DIY solar kit. Doing it yourself will always save a bunch of money and this is no exception. When evaluating DIY solar systems you must first determine your wattage need then determine what is within your budget.

One of the best things about a solar home, is that if you produce excess electricity your meter will turn backwards and the electric company will either pay you or subtract from your electric bill. This is a great feeling, after years of gawking at electric bills it is nice to feel like I am able to one up them for a change.

Things to Consider

Investment

Some people are more worried than others about seeing any type of return on investment. I will assume that you would like to see some of your money back at some point. You can approach this a couple different ways. You either want to see it paid off in cost savings from a decreased electric bill. This can take many years because the DIY solar systems are still expensive. Or you want to be able to sell your home and recoup your expense. This is much more probable. Solar on a home has the potential to be a very strong selling point.

Coverage

Some people are disappointed to find out that there roofs may not be ideal for a solar system. It needs to be facing the right direction and not be covered by any type of obstruction. South facing roofs that get six hours or more of direct sunlight per day are ideal.

If coverage is a problem there are other options too. Is there an area on your property that you could build a carport and install the photovoltaic panels there. You are not limited to putting panels on your home especially if you live on any type of property. The amount of energy lost during transmission to your home could more than make up for the improved coverage.

Are you a do it yourself type person? A lot of people feel very passionate about this subject which may drive them to do something that they may not be comfortable doing or even be qualified to do. If you are comparable handling tools on a roof and understand electricity go for it.

Getting the right panels. Like anything else you need to shop around. You can buy them online and some Home Depots actually carry solar panels. Find the best deal and shop the competition. There is a lot of options these days.

Whoever you end up buying from you will want to make sure that they will offer some level of support if you run into problems. It is also a good idea to have a qualified electrician come out and do an assessment of your home to properly determine your needs.

Make sure that you understand what you are getting before you purchase a DIY solar system. Understand any warranty issues and who you need to call to get service work done. Installing a solar system is a large undertaking that has the potential to cause various problems. You will be making roof penetrations and dealing with electrical loads, make sure you have someone you can call if you need answers.

A DIY solar panel system is an excellent investment not only in your home but also in your future as well as your kids.
